Book Review – Likeable Social Media by Dave Kerpen

There’s much more to social media marketing than just “likes” and “follows.”

Likeable Social Media: How to Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, and Be Generally Amazing on Facebook (and other social media networks)” by Dave Kerpen opened my eyes to the depth and breadth of things you can do with social media, as an individual and as a business.

Dave’s writing style is likeable (see what I did there?) and easy to read. He tells story after story of real life social media failures and successes from companies such as Oreo, Macy’s, Neutrogena, and Stride Rite.

Each chapter is followed by multiple, detailed “Action Steps” that you can take immediately to improve your social media game.

Dave inspires social media users to be likeable by providing value, listening, being authentic, building community, and going the extra step to “surprise and delight” customers.

The majority of concepts and case studies in the book apply to large corporations, but Dave does a great job of relating to small business owners as well. If you are running a one woman or one man company, you will still learn a lot from this book.

The history of each social media network (Dave covers everything from Facebook and Twitter to Tumblr and foursquare in an Appendix) and the detailed descriptions of their individual cultures was fun to read.

You don’t have to be a social media professional to enjoy this book. I found myself sharing many of the insights and cool stories with my husband. Anyone with an interest in technology, marketing, advertising, consumer behavior, communications or business will get something out of Likeable Social Media.

Social media can be overwhelming, and potentially a huge waste of time if you’re not doing it right. Likeable Social Media will help you decide which social networks are worth your time and how to implement a social media strategy. There’s so much good information to digest that it is worthy of a second read.
