We all start January with a long list of resolutions and the best of intentions, don’t we? We know the year ahead of us is filled with so much potential and if you’re a goal setter like me you might be buzzing with excitement.
But then time passes, and life happens, and sometimes you lose that sparkle! You might have a bad day here and there, and feel like your goals are totally out of reach. By the time three quarters of the year has passed you might be ready to say “screw it! I didn’t want to reach those goals anyways!”
If you’re losing steam, don’t give up yet! There is still time to reach your goals, or at least make some progress towards your dreams. And some progress is better than none! Here are my tips for motivating yourself to finish the year strong and make it to the goals finish line!
Motivation To Push Through To The Finish Line!
Phone a friend!
Are you private with your goals or do you let it all hang out? I post about mine online obviously, but I don’t share a lot with my real life friends and family. If you need an extra push to finish out the year – tell more people about your goals! Even better if you can tell someone who can hold you accountable. Choose positive people who will cheer you on when you’re on the right track and who aren’t afraid to say something when they see you making the wrong choices.
Post it everywhere!
Where do you keep your list of goals? Hidden in a notebook? Forgotten in a word document? Get them out in the open! Post them on your Facebook page, put them on Post-it notes all over your house, put them on a giant sheet of paper and tape it to the front of your fridge! Get really creative with this – use colorful markers and get artsy! Take a picture of your goals sheet and save it – then set the picture as your lock screen on your phone!
Make it fun!
If you are feeling burnt out by your hard work all year so far don’t just quit. Instead, brainstorm ways to make your goals more fun! Is there a reward that will motivate you? Could you turn your goals into a contest with your friends and family? Don’t take life so seriously all the time – have some fun with it! 🙂
Cheer someone else on!
This is another piece of advice that applies to all areas of life, not just goals. Feeling all “woe is me” about your life? Stop focusing so much on yourself and go focus on someone else! Who else do you know that is working towards something, and maybe losing steam just like you? Go cheer them on and lift them up! It’s an instant mood boost for you and will hopefully re-motivate you as a result. 🙂
Play the comparison game!
In all other situations I recommend NOT comparing yourself to others. However, I have noticed something when it comes to goals. When I read a goals update from another blogger for example, I get super motivated! I think “wow! They are achieving so much! I better get my butt in gear!” Ask your friends and family what their goals are and how things are going. If you don’t have a lot of goal diggers in your life, I recommend checking out the goals-oriented link parties on these three blogs: Fab Working Mom Life, Devastate Boredom and Morning Motivated Mom. Tons of inspiration awaits!
Your goals just might not have been right! It’s okay to reassess and tweak whenever you see fit! It doesn’t make you a quitter to make adjustments. Not interested in a goal anymore? Scratch it off the list! No sweat. Need to lower a goal number so you can actually reach it by the end of the year? Do it!

Quarter 3 Goals Review
I set my long list of goals for 2016 here, and I updated you on the first quarter here, and the second quarter here. Let’s take a look at where things stand now, after the third quarter of the year has ended.
Parenting & Family
I potty trained my oldest son! Whoo hoo! I’m so proud of that accomplishment that I don’t even care about my other goals! In this category I did also have a nice mani/pedi date with my stepdaughter during her summer visit (it’s a tradition for us).
Health & Wellness
I have kept my 30 lb weight loss off! My original goal was to just lose the weight, but I think keeping it off is actually an even bigger accomplishment!
I have seen more friends lately! I attended a birthday party for a friend’s daughter one weekend, a second birthday party for the son of a friend at the gym the next weekend, and then went to a former co-worker’s house for a football viewing party. Fun! 🙂 It has been a great reminder of pre-mom life when I left my house much more often! I have some social anxiety, but I know getting out is good for me so I’m proud of this win!
I’m surprising myself by setting and reaching new goals that I hadn’t thought of at the beginning of the year. In fact, the morning that this blog post is published, I’ll be off running my first 10K race! 🙂 Lesson there is that it’s okay to let your goals evolve and change as the year goes by! 🙂
Room For Improvement
I have published over 80 posts in 2016 so far so I should have no problems reaching my goal of 100 posts. I have more than my goal of 5,000 Twitter followers, 905 Pinterest followers (goal is 1,000), and 296 likes on my Facebook page (goal is 500). I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing here! Lot’s of my other blog “to do’s” still need to be done, when I decide to make them a priority. I did do a blog reader survey in honor of my one year blogging anniversary! 🙂 Please take it if you haven’t already!
Health & Wellness
Still long overdue for the dentist and eye doctor. And my sleep is really poor. I think that problem has actually become worse as the year has progressed – mostly due to stress and anxiety! I average 6 hours or less a night and I feel the effects of long term sleep deprivation.
I don’t want to talk about it. Ha! 🙂 Do people really have working cleaning schedules, toy rotations and book rotations? Or is this a myth being promoted by Pinterest? I was very hard on myself earlier in the year in terms of how clean my house is. My sister gave me the good reminder that “Life is short.” I have been stressing less and letting go more (at least in that area) ever since. Some weeks I am really on top of things and my house looks awesome. Other weeks, not so much, and that’s okay! 🙂
I have not done as much as I wanted to in 2016, but there’s still time. I feel so drawn to yoga, and I really feel different when I do take the time to do it. It calms my mind, improves my mood, and just generally uplifts me!
Financial Goals and Dreams
If you have been following my blog for a while, you already know that I am fighting hard to becoming financially fit. I update monthly, and unfortunately I am not as far along as I had hoped to be with my money goals. There have just been so many struggles and setbacks along the way. One big win however is the fact that I reached my $1,000 baby emergency fund goal!
I am still far from my debt pay off goal and my personal monthly income goal. There is room for improvement, sure, but I am far from a failure. I have learned a lot so far this year, and even if I don’t meet 100% of my financial goals I am far more educated, informed, and capable than I was at the beginning of the year.
There’s Still Time …
If you haven’t seen the Tony Robbins documentary I’m Not Your Guru yet, I highly recommend it (available on Netflix). It is incredible and I have watched it several times. In one scene, Tony is talking to a young suicidal man about how hard he is on himself. He tells him “there’s still time.” It’s a really touching moment and it stuck with me.
I am telling myself this as the year comes to a rapid close, and I hope you hear it too. We don’t need to rush, we don’t need to always push ourselves to the max. We are all doing great. If you get up every morning and get out of bed you’re doing great (seriously!). Life can be incredibly difficult. We all have bad days and there are terrible things happening all over the world. Haven’t met your goals yet? It’s okay, there’s still time. <3
