It’s Okay If You Haven’t Set Goals Yet | New Year’s Update

Hello friends – just a really quick update for you today.

First – Happy New Year! 🙂 Second, a confession. I haven’t set my goals or resolutions for 2017 yet. I didn’t do a detailed review of 2016. This should surprise you if you know how much I love goals, and how much I love this time of year! What have I been doing instead? Getting through the holidays, dealing with life stresses, struggling with my anxiety, and most recently recovering from a pretty bad stomach flu that took down both me and my oldest son! To say the least – 2017 is off to a rough start!

It’s Okay If You Haven’t Set Goals Yet

As the dates on the calendar start flipping past (I can’t believe it’s the 5th already!), it’s easy to start feeling discouraged. Shouldn’t I be working on making 2017 “the best year ever!” like everyone else? I start feeling like everyone else is moving forward and I’m not. I feel let down and like my chance to make 2017 amazing is slipping away. I feel anxious about what I haven’t accomplished and depressed about missed opportunities. I’m working on shaking those negative feelings though (is anyone else more negative when they are sick?) and giving myself some grace.

That’s who this blog post is for – anyone who hasn’t set their 2017 goals yet, and is feeling a little behind or discouraged. You are not alone, and it’s okay!

Resolutions & Goals Aren’t Just for January

it's okay if you haven't set goals yet

Resolutions don’t have to start on January 1st. Goals don’t have to follow a calendar. You can dream big, get organized, and make positive changes to your life at anytime. Night or Day. January or June. You’re not behind. It’s never too late to be better.

Sometimes life will throw you a loop and you just need to rest. That’s okay. This too shall pass. You’ll recover. You’ll start feeling better and getting your energy back. Life will return to normal and you can set all kinds of amazing plans in place to reach your 2017 goals! After all, it doesn’t matter what day you start working on your goals – it matters that you keep working on them until they are achieved!

Have you set your 2017 goals yet?

  1. So true! I hope you can take your own wise insights to heart and rest, relax, and know that January 1st is just a made-up concept… every day is the beginning of the rest of our lives. ;P Your life, and your 2017, is going to be amazing! And right now, it sounds like part of that is taking a breather. 😉 I’ll keep sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

  3. We are usually kind of lazy to get to our goals for the year. We try to do it within the first week or so of January. This year I was anxious to get them done early so I could blog about it. But…it still didn’t get done until a couple of days ago.

I agree with you. It doesn’t matter so much that you plan your goals on January 1. Just plan them! 🙂 Happy New Year.

  7. I agree, it is NOT too late. Any day is a good day to start and any day is a good day to restart. I think I will be adjusting mine as the weeks go by. I hope everyone in your family stays healthy!

  8. No goals for this girl this year!
I have a hard time getting the word from the paper into action. I still sort of make them, I just don’t write anything down. Then I won’t get disappointed if I don’t get it done. LOL!!

  9. New Year’s Resolutions always seem to overwhelm me, so I don’t do very well with them anyway. Sure, it’s nice to have those big goals in mind, but even treating every new month as a new beginning can be so beneficial. So much pressure is put on January 1st, when you really can better yourself any day of the year. Thanks for the reminder <3

  10. I tend to feel very motivated in January so it’s a good time for me to establish new habits. It’s definitely not too late to set some goals though!

  11. I have a plan through the first quarter. That’s as far as I got. And they’re not even really goals, it’s just stuff I need to do. And a calendar. That’s filling up through July, but I have not set any goals really, and I’m with you. It’s OK.

  12. Hello and happy new year. I decided this is a no resolutions year for me. I am doing declarations, which sounds so much more positive. I declared a few things, made a timeline, and now I am slowly immersing into them. I want my 2017 to be super positive.

  13. I’m sorry you’ve been under the weather. I hope you feel better soon! I definitely was late to set my goals but I’m so happy with them now and ready to start the year. I mean… We can officially start now right? haha.

  14. Happy New Year to you! I do not set specific New Year goals exactly, but my husband and I do make a list of what we want to have accomplished or experiences by December 31. Giving us a year to tackle, work for, or plan to do those things. Sometimes they are big goals, other times it is spend every weekend not working but with the kids, or eat more ice cream. Anything. It is fun to reflect on them.

  15. After all of the curve balls 2016 threw, I don’t think I’m setting any goals this year! LOL.

  16. I kept thinking the same thing! “I love goals! Why haven’t I set any for this year?!” I’ve got a few ideas, but I haven’t really set them in stone yet. I’m really liking the idea of starting with a few and adding to them as the year passes.

    • I might do a New Year’s do-over on February first if you want to join me 😉 We will get there eventually and we’ll have a great year regardless!
