My sweet baby boy is about to turn one at the end of February! He had a scary entrance into the world, but is a happy. healthy little guy now. He isn’t walking yet (his big brother walked before his 1st birthday) but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like to move! In fact, he is always “dancing!” It’s so cute. 🙂
He really loves music of any kind and will wave, shake and bop to almost any sound! I have to get my little music lover the perfect first birthday present, so I went on a search for the best musical toys for babies!
I have rounded up my favorite musical toys for babies and toddlers – some we already own and some are on my wishlist. There’s something here for every budget – check it out!
Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube
I have heard rave reviews about this one! Recommended for “budding young composers” the Mozart Magic Cube is an educational toy that teaches how different sounds combine to create musical masterpieces. The cube features bright colors, lights that flash to the tempo of the music, and harp, piano, French horn, flute and violin sounds.
Fisher-Price Rattle and Rock Maracas
I love these! Traditional wooden maracas might be too heavy or too hard for your baby’s current stage. The Fisher Price Rattle and Rock Maracas have soft “pom pom” ends that are perfect for little hands. My baby is still very much teething so those soft pom poms would be great for chewing too. These are also the perfect size for tossing in a diaper bag for musical fun on the go.
Green Tones Shakers & Drum
Sometimes the best toys are the simplest, do you agree? This Green Tones Elephant Shaker is an adorable rattle that baby R already owns and enjoys. He not only loves making music by shaking it, but it’s also a perfect teether!
Green Tones is an eco-friendly toy company with lot’s of great options. I also love this Green Tones Endangered Animals Shaker set. Wouldn’t that be a perfect baby shower gift for an animal lover?
The Green Tones Mama Bear Drum is very high on the list of possible birthday gifts for baby R.
He loves slapping his hands on any flat surface so this drum would be so much fun, and since we already own the Elephant Shaker, I know the Mama Bear Drum will be a great quality toy. Plus, I can’t get over the cuteness!
Baby Einstein Discovering Music Activity Table
A musical activity table is a great option for babies who are standing and cruising. Baby R isn’t quite ready for this one, but his big brother had a similar table at this age and loved it! If you have a baby who is just starting to pull up, I’d wait on this one, as they are easy to pull over.
There is a “on the floor” option (just leave the legs off) to this Baby Einstein activity table, making it good for multiple stages of development.
Velcro Wrist Shake Bells
Do you remember playing with jingle bells in music class when you were a kid? I do! These wrist straps are fully adjustable (with velrco) so they will fit baby and kids up to age 7! I love the sound of jingle bells and this would be a simple, fun, inexpensive toy.
Hape Pound & Tap Bench with Slide Out Xylophone
I can picture my toddler stealing this toy from the baby, especially because of the “pounding.” A rainbow colored xylophone is such a classic kids instrument, I’d love to add one to our toy collection. I also thought the Hape Pound & Tap Bench was a really unique take on a xylophone, since babies can pound the balls with a mallet and hear the sounds they make when they hit the keys. If that’s not enough fun, the xylophone slides out to be used on it’s own. So it’s really multiple toys in one!
Hape Maracas and Clappers
Hape, a German toy company, is one of the largest producers of eco-friendly toys (made from sustainable materials) in the world. I love their design aesthetic and have tons of Hape items on my Amazon wishlist.
The Hape Mini Maracas are such a unique shape, perfect for chubby little baby hands. And the Hape Clickety-Clack Clappers are another fun option for noise making toys (although better for toddlers age 3 and up).
Fisher-Price Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo
For the tech-savvy babies – a dancing robot! Dance & Move BeatBo dances to music (nods his head and shakes his hips), lights up, and has educational features for teaching colors, counting and ABC’s. BeatBo looks pretty cute, but I’m a little hesitant because we have a talking/dancing Minion and baby R is afraid of it! Also, add BeatBo to the list of “toys stolen by big brother!”
LeapFrog Poppin’ Play Piano
We own this one and it is very popular in our house! Not only does the LeapFrog Poppin Play Piano play sounds/music, it also has modes for teaching both colors and numbers. Colored balls pop up when you hit the keys on the piano. It’s very lightweight and easy for kids to carry around. The Poppin Play Piano was actual my first son’s first birthday gift! He still plays with it at almost three years old.
Skip Hop 3 Piece Explore and More Egg Shaker Set
Egg shakers are a pretty popular option for baby and toddler musical instruments, but they can be a little boring! I loved discovering this set of whimsical Skip Hop egg shakers. They are different shapes (owl, hedgehog and fox), feature different textures for baby to touch, and each one makes a unique sound. Out of all the toys on my list, these are my #2 choice for baby R’s birthday, I know he would really love them!
