What’s a link up party? A blog hop? A linky party?
Have you ever heard any of those terms? Read on to find out what they are and how they can help you as a beginner blogger! 🙂
Link up parties are a way to share links to your blog content, while also checking out lot’s of new blogs yourself!
As a new blogger you might be interested in link up parties as a way to encourage traffic to your site. It can be tough checking your page views every day (obsessively, please tell me I’m not alone!), and seeing very small numbers or even *gulp* zeroes. 🙁
Link parties, or blog hops, are also pretty inspirational. You will see lot’s of great content shared and might discover your new favorite blogger through one.
So how does it work? One blog (or a small group) will host the link up party on a particular day of the week. When the party opens, bloggers can add their posts to the party. Every link up party has their own rules, so be sure to read them before you participate. Some may ask you to follow the host or to comment on a certain number of posts. Others may have rules regarding what types of posts you can share.
Good link up party etiquette (no matter the rules) would be to visit and comment on a few other link up participants posts. I aim for two to three. Pick posts that look genuinely interesting to you, read them thoroughly and leave a thoughtful comment. Sharing about the link up through social media is also nice to do – after all, the more people who know about the link-up, the more people who may see your blog post.
I never thought I could participate in a blog hop or link up. I had seen them many times before as a blog reader, and have actually found lot’s of great new blogs to read by clicking on thumbnails on link-up party pages. I honestly didn’t think I was “good enough” or experienced enough to participate. But I kept hearing link parties being mentioned on podcasts I was listening to, or listed in articles I was reading about how to be a better blogger or gain more readers. So I did a little more research and found out the link up parties are for everyone, and are pretty welcoming to bloggers of all experience levels.
I decided to give it a shot and figure out this link up party thing!
A quick google search led me to this great page – The Ultimate Link Up Party List by Sarah at My Joy Filled Life. Thank you Sarah for compiling such a great list, organized by days of the week, on your blog. Sarah blogs about homeschooling among other topics, so if that interests you please pay her blog a visit!
I chose three link parties to participate in, and may add others (they are time consuming!) as I continue my blogging journey.
Dare to Share Saturday, hosted by Pam’s Party & Practical Tips (and others) – a Saturday link-up party.
The SHINE Blog Hop, hosted by The Deliberate Mom (and others) – a Thursday blog hop.
This is How We Roll Thursdays, hosted by Wondermom Wannabe (and others) – a Thursday link up party.
I choose three parties that are pretty wide open when it comes to topics. A lot of link-ups are crafting related, or aimed at Christian bloggers. I don’t fit into either of those categories, but if you do that’s wonderful! You will have a lot to choose from! Recipe posts are also pretty popular on link up parties from what I can tell – so get cooking and baking!
Linking up to the above parties was super easy. All I had to do was go to the correct page (on the correct day), scroll down and find a blue “add link” button. After clicking the button I pasted in my URL, added my name and email address, and selected an image (already attached to my blog post) and hit submit! Voila! Piece of cake. I wish I had known sooner how easy it was.
I have been feeling down and discouraged lately, as I am in month two of blogging and not seeing any “results” yet. I am enjoying the writing so much and feel accomplished every time I complete a post and hit “publish.” But I let the numbers, or lack of numbers I should say, of page views and comments get me down sometimes.
So what was the result of participating in my first link up parties?
Well …the original title of this blog post was going to be “I GOT MY FIRST BLOG COMMENT!!!” 🙂
That’s actually the exact text I sent to my husband after seeing the notification on my WordPress app that I had received a comment, and then checking to see that it was a REAL comment from a REAL human being not a spam-bot!
Lauren from LovetobeMrsB commented on my You Have Your Hands Full post link that I shared on the SHINE link up party. How kind of her! 🙂 She blogs about being a former teacher and mom to twins, so please check out her blog and leave her some love!
So much of blogging is about community and making connections. So thank you to all the bloggers out there who host and participate in link up parties, and thanks to Lauren for making me feel like someone is listening! 🙂
